That is the important part, right? You want to know what music can bring to a funeral service and how it would work. If you asked me to play the violin at a funeral, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

The right music

First, choose the right music. There are many beautiful pieces of classical music that are well-suited for funerals, such as “Adagio for Strings” by Samuel Barber, “The Lark Ascending” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and “Amazing Grace” or even “Gluck Melodie”. You may also want to consider playing a piece of music that was special to the deceased.

This is not an easy task. Give me your choice early enough to practice your music ahead of time. You don’t want me to be fumbling with your sheet music or making mistakes during the funeral. I will make sure I know the music inside and out so that you can focus on your ceremony.

Like you, I will dress appropriately. Funerals are formal occasions, so we should dress in respectful clothing. This doesn’t mean I have to wear black, but I will avoid anything too casual or revealing.

Being emotional

Be prepared to be emotional. Playing the violin at a funeral can be a very emotional experience. You have lost someone who was very close to you. It’s important to be prepared for the possibility that you may start to cry during the performance. If this happens, don’t be afraid to take a moment to compose yourself. The audience will understand.

Finally, remember that we are playing for the deceased. The music is a way of saying goodbye and honoring their memory. I will always play from the heart and let the music speak for itself.
